CAN YOGA HELP ME IN SLEEPING BETTER?

More often than not, we ignore all of this and keep going without realizing that this can have a very negative and long-lasting effect. The National Sleep Foundation did a study and concluded that almost 45% of the population of America was struggling to get a good sleep. 

The percentage is slightly less in the UK than in America yet is considerably high with 37%. Many people have insomnia or other sleeping disorders such as apnea, oversleeping, or grinding teeth while sleeping. Others wake up at night even with the slightest noise. These are all factors that prevent healthy sleeping patterns. It is essential to sleep well every day as that is when our mind, as well as body, relaxes and hence one must give it due importance. This gets us to the question, can yoga help cope with these and, with time, can help a person in sleeping better? Yoga regulates our breathing and reduces stress, thus giving the mind the proper relaxation that it needs. 

A study done in Harvard with 20 students suffering from different types of insomnia found that they were all able to sleep better with eight weeks of regular yoga. A similar study was done in a Government Medical College in Nagpur, India. Sixty-five people had participated, out of which 35 did yoga regularly, whereas 30 did only regular stretching. Those who did yoga slept better, and hence their performance improved.

Sometimes if they wake up again at night, they can return to sleep quicker. Yoga also helps pregnant women and cancer patients bring their energy into the center, thus calming their minds. In Brazil, Universidad Federal de São Paulo did a study with 44 women after their menopause aged between 50-65 years. All of them felt a soothing effect and slept peacefully. 

Many poses such as lying down and keeping legs up such as to make L shape, lying down and making a butterfly shape with legs by making the bottom of feet touch and corpse pose, that is simply lying down on the back and keeping the body straight with palms facing upwards are a few examples that can help a person in sleeping better. Yoga increases the flow of oxygen, hence increases our efficiency, and it also helps in removing toxins from the body. Therefore, practicing yoga regularly can improve our health and help our body relax, which increases concentration level and boosts our efficiency.
