Sainik Schools in India

 





Sainik Schools are public sector schools established in India to improve the quality of education offered by government-funded schools. They were set up under the Sainik School Society, founded in 1962 by India's Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. to provide quality education from class VI to class XII in rural areas and also to provide free boarding and lodging facilities for students from weaker sections of society. Originally, there were only three schools: one each at Anandpur in Punjab, Bijapur in Karnataka, and Valiamala in Kerala. Presently there are thirty-one more Sainik Schools spread over different parts of the country.


As per survey done by schools in India, Sainik Schools are highly competitive, elite schools that are run and funded by the Ministry of Defense (Government of India). The schools admit boys only and provide education till Class XII. There are Sainik Schools situated in almost all districts of India and some are also situated outside the country. The administration of Sainik Schools is vested with the Board of Governors under the Ministry of Defense.


Sainik School takes admissions through an entrance exam (AISSEE) which is open to all Indian boys for classes 6th and 9th.

Sainik Schools Society aims to develop and promote academic excellence, patriotism, courage, discipline, and leadership among students mainly from rural areas by providing them education equivalent in standard and outlook to a college education.


Sainik Schools provide modern and disciplined education in the English language. Uniforms, books, and all equipment, except spectacles and shoes, are supplied by the school. No fee is charged for admission to a Sainik School nor admission to classes therein. However, the children who opt to stay at the schools' hostels have to pay a nominal maintenance fee every month.


Sainik Schools Sainik School provides a very disciplined atmosphere for the overall development of the cadets. The school is headed by a Director who is a retired commander of the Armed Forces. He is supported by other senior staff (Principals, Vice-Principals, and teachers) and NCC officers. Physical training and sports form an important part of the routine at Sainik Schools and emphasis are laid on physical fitness. There is provision for adventure activities such as excursions to hills and camping. The syllabus is designed to prepare boys for careers in the armed forces, civil services, and public services.


These educational institutions have consistently provided the nation with some of its most distinguished and meritorious citizens who have been defense ministers, the Vice Chiefs of Army Staff, Air Chief Marshals, and several other Air Warriors. A large number of Army generals and officers who have served with honor in all 10 corps areas besides those in our Police forces and no fewer than four Olympians were students of Sainik Schools.
