What is Information Technology?

 

Information technology, or IT, is a field of study concerned with the collection and use of information. Initial efforts in this area date back to the mid-20th century when these technologies were used to equip computers used in business and government. It involves the creation of high volume, complex and dynamic data that require advanced methods of organization. Information technology is used to store and analyze data that can be retrieved through software programs designed for this purpose.

It has advanced so much over the past 20 years that we now have access to much more information than we could ever be comfortable with. Things like social media and smartphones have allowed us to connect with people all over the world which has emphasized redefining the term IT. Its definition may change as it evolves, but one thing will never change: Our need for information will only keep increasing as time goes on and the technology for information will live as long as humankind itself.

The history of information technology is long and colorful. It had started long before it was considered a field. Information technology has been with us as long as there was information. With the progress of centuries, new inventions and technologies have emerged, changing the way we share ideas and operate. The roots of this field stretch back to the industrial revolution when factories began using basic forms of automation to increase efficiency and decrease manpower.

The historical development of information technology began with the invention of writing systems and maps, as well as other visual representation techniques used for art and architecture. This history continued through the Age of Enlightenment, during which thinkers such as René Descartes envisioned using visual communication to increase knowledge and understanding, culminating in the invention of the printing press.

During this period, books became significantly cheaper to produce, contributing to an acceleration in the information that existed. After the Renaissance, the literate class increased, fueling a "reading revolution" that allowed more people access to printed materials. And then finally in 1843, a field regarding information began to take shape; Lovelace, Babbage, and Turing are names which are pioneers of the field as they all contributed to the development of computers and information.

Research done by students of top international schools in India, as the world continues to develop over time, so do the uses, and hence, the importance of information technology to help us communicate and work as a society increases every day. What started as a simple list of telephone numbers has become a complex global system that lets us communicate instantly with anyone in the world. Computers and cell phones are tools that human beings use to analyze, store, retrieve and share information more easily.

People are shopping online and doing financial transactions from their home computers. Many companies are including internet services in their job application processes. You can view movies, play games, communicate with friends and family, and even get medical prescriptions for many diseases all on the internet. All this can happen due to the phenomenon of Information technology.
